The glowing Katerina. I shot her North County maternity portrait in Solana Beach, near San Elijo Lagoon. I love the soft, subtle glow of the sun behind her. Combined with her expression, it's one of my faves!
The week before I photographed Jen's maternity session, I photographed a family session Ken and Katerina--whose wedding I photographed several years ago--and their young daughter. We had rescheduled from the previous weekend, when we were deluged with a late-Spring storm, and we couldn't have been more blessed with wonderful weather.
Last one from my maternity shoot at Moonlight Beach with Jen.
I don't shoot a lot of maternity photographs, so when I do I naturally take a different approach than those who shoot this type of work more regularly. This shot was taken in a grassy meadow on the banks of the San Elijo Lagoon, so it would be completely expected for any photographer to play it safe and go for the common backlit-ethereal look (which I did as well). But I knew Jen would appreciate something a bit different, too, so I got her in half-sun-half-shade went for it. The background got a bit blown-out, but not so much that the detail was lost. There's still that wonderful pastel blue of the sky that complements her olive-green dress.
The gorgeous Jen, once again. If you read my previous post, you'll recall how I love to stretch artistically, especially when the client is game. But commercial artists don't work in a vacuum--balancing our artistic desires with those of our clients is often challenging, and it's important to give the client what they want. For this image, I played it safe knowing I'd get an amazing result that she'd love. Shooting into the sun, background blown out, wonderful pose and expression... BINGO.
