Hopefully you caught Part 1 of their shoot in La Jolla. After getting great stuff there, we find ourselves up the coast for some great beach photos at sunset!
I love shooting Del Mar beach engagement photos for so many reasons! For example, the view to the south has an amazing vista of La Jolla. It’s one of the few stretches of beach where you can get this view! In addition,
Julia and Josh absolutely nailed it with the wardrobe selection for their beach engagement photos. I love it when clients take suggestions and run with them!
South of the beach entrance at 15th Street there’s a concrete aqueduct that runs down the bluff to the sand. The gentle sloping lines create a nice composition with the horizon in the background.
When the light is low over the ocean, I love shooting into the setting sun and getting that creamy, blown-out background. It really makes the subjects pop, especially in black and white!
Julia and Josh had seen an engagement shoot on my site in which the bride and groom celebrated with champagne. They wanted the same thing for their beach engagement photos. I’ve done so many shoots over the last two decades–it’s wonderful to have an archive that can inspire my current clients!

One of the great things about shooting Del Mar beach engagement photos in the evening is the quality of the light. As the sun dips below the summer marine layer, the light gets really soft and flattering.
