I was really excited to photograph the Rancho Santa Fe wedding of some old friends of mine, Lara and Nelz. The lovely couple were married at the Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club, a quaint venue in the heart of Rancho Santa Fe. In addition to close family and friends, Lara and Nelz were joined by their dog, Cassius, who donned a couture dog tuxedo. [Images photographed on Fuji 400H and Fuji Superia 800 film.]
Another weekend, another wedding on the road... I had the distinct pleasure of spending last weekend in Ojai, photographing Teri and Rand's Twin Peaks Ranch wedding. I remember discussing Teri and Rand's wedding back in April, right after we shot their engagement session in Santa Barbara, and couldn't wait to see what the day would bring. It did not disappoint.
We began the day at the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa, the luxurious compound where Teri and Rand got ready. From there we headed directly to the Ranch, guided through the oak-covered streets by hand-made "Teri and Rand" signs. Upon stepping out of my car I was greeted by 106 ℉ weather, but thankfully their gorgeous ceremony was held under a canopy of giant oak and eucalyptus trees.
Their reception was beautifully styled by Tonya Szele, who, along with Mindy Rice's over-the-top floral design, pulled out all the stops in helping Teri and Rand design the event. Guests were treated to delicious apps and dinner by Command Performance Catering, incredible tunes by the Tijuana Dogs, and a killer video by superstar filmmaker/producer Pete Santa Maria.
Special thanks to Ásgeir Bollason for his help in shooting this wedding!
On Saturday night, Amy and Ian hosted their guests to a wonderful destination wedding rehearsal in Quechee Vermont at The Quechee Club, just down the road from Woodstock. As good as we have it in San Diego, summer evenings in New England are tough to beat. The air is thick, the sun sets a bit later and, on this night, spirits were high in anticipation for Amy and Ian's wedding the next day. After a wonderful BBQ, guests participated in a Havdalah ceremony, a Jewish tradition that symbolizes the end of Shabbat (sabbath) and ushers in the new week.
Every so often, I have a "pinch me" moment. A few weekends back I found myself in Woodstock, Vermont, to photograph Amy and Ian's destination wedding. While sipping coffee at a quaint cafe prior to shooting Amy and Ian's engagement shoot, I had to pinch myself and ask, 'how the hell did I get here?' How did a kid who grew up surfing and eating carne asada burritos on the beach in Encinitas, California, end up in Vermont to photograph a wedding for a couple who lives in Boston?
We began Amy and Ian's Vermont destination engagement photos on a beautiful morning in the gem that is Woodstock. Woodstock has a lot of sentimental value to Amy and Ian, so I wanted to incorporate as much of the environment as I could. The center of town is filled with antique shops and cafes in buildings that date back to the mid-1800s, which made for some incredible backdrops. Down the road from the center of town lies the Taftsville bridge, a gorgeous covered bridge that, in the morning, captures the light just perfectly. As the morning went on, we ventured farther out of Woodstock toward the small town of Quechee, where we found rustic barns, rows of cornfields and lush pastures--scenes directly out of a Thoreau novel.
The shoot wrapped with a stroll through a street festival in Woodstock which, thankfully, had delectable cuisine and craft beer ;-)
This San Diego Botanical Garden Ultimate Skybox wedding, on the 4th of July no less, oozes inspiration! Heather and Monty were a great change of pace from the get-go! First off, they each wanted to meet with me separately so their own feelings and opinions about what they wanted in their wedding photography could come to the surface, without running the risk of one's judgement being influenced by the other's presence. Monty and I met for a beer in La Jolla Shores, while Heather and I met at my house. During each meeting I was able to get a great sense of who they were, what they liked, and how I could record in the most beautiful way possible their fantastic wedding!
Heather works at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park as specialist for, among other things, several breeds of birds! Pay special attention to the feathers used in Heather's headpiece and bouquet, as well as Monty's boutonniere--they incorporate feathers that were dropped from some of Heather's animal friends at the Park!
Special thanks to Michael for his fantastic help photographing this wedding! Also a shout-out to Amanda from Creative Affairs, Inc., for a great job of designing and coordinating this wonderful event!
