Same Sex Wedding

Moody Same Sex Couple Portrait

I learned how to be a photographer by shooting for a daily newspaper.  The skills I learned shooting assignments--finding great light, working in a small timeframe, coming away with the goods no matter what--are the foundation for my wedding photography. This moody same sex couple portrait of Chase and Matt is a perfect example of that.  Shortly after shooting all of their group photos, I had about 15 minutes with the two grooms  to shoot the majority of their portraits together.  I had already scouted out several locations in the Hotel Del Coronado, but I always leave room for something spontaneous.  As we were walking to our first location, I noticed the late-afternoon sun shining in small shafts throughout the center courtyard.  With the background mostly in shade, I new I could put them in the sun and make a romantic, high-contrast portrait of these two.

San Diego Same Sex Wedding

When shooting San Diego wedding photos, I love looking for new angles.  At Chase and Matt's same sex wedding at the Hotel Del Coronado, designers had constructed a rustic-looking arch made of stained wood and adorned with gorgeous florals.  The ceremony location at the Del, the Windsor Lawn, is great as it allows one to shoot from behind the ceremony, looking back towards the iconic hotel.  Shooting through slats in the arch help to isolate the subjects, and the Del provides an unbelievable background. This is Matt's husband, Chase.  I photographed Chase in sunroom overlooking the courtyard at the Hotel Del Coronado, shortly before their wedding ceremony.  In terms of setup, just about as simple as it gets:  great light, classic pose, timeless styling. same sex wedding groom portrait classic tux black and white

Groom Portrait

Heading up the stairs on the way to photograph Matt before his wedding, I noticed how wonderful this little landing was.  It had all the components I love for a portrait:  great light, empty space and wonderful texture.  After shooting Matt getting ready and on our way to photograph the first look, we stopped to make this groom portrait.  I could have chosen to frame out the sconce, but I chose to keep it in to break up the monotony of the background. groom portrait same sex wedding hotel del coronado
